College of Education
Make an Impact Through Research

Faculty in the College of Education (COE) engage in research focused on teaching, learning, and counseling to advance the success of schools and communities. Their work draws on a range of methodologies and theoretical frameworks, with findings used to inform practice and support both educational and community-based partners.
COE students—undergraduate through doctoral—actively participate in research alongside our faculty. At MTSU, students have access to exciting opportunities to explore meaningful questions in education, and many of our students conduct studies across a variety of educational settings. Their work often leads to conference presentations and publications that contribute to scholarly conversations both nationally and globally.
The COE welcomes opportunities to establish new research partnerships. If you are engaged in education-related research and believe our faculty and students can contribute to this work, we invite you to reach out to explore potential collaborations.

Research Spotlight

The Literacy Studies Ph.D. Program has secured a grant of $1,013,000 from an anonymous family foundation to support 7 doctoral students over the next four years. Funding aims to address one of the nation’s most pressing needs – the shortage of scholars, PK-12 leaders, non-profit leaders, and policymakers equipped to bridge the gap between growing research in literacy and educational practice, policy, and professional preparation.
An interdisciplinary program that spans the College of Education, College of Behavioral and Health Sciences, and College of Liberal Arts, the Literacy Studies Ph.D. Program offers rigorous coursework, field experiences, and research opportunities designed to provide students with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to develop innovative solutions to improve literacy in the U.S. and beyond. The program blends the best of research-intensive and practice-oriented training to develop literacy leaders who can effectively translate research for real-world impact. Program alumni are transforming literacy nationwide serving as state and district leaders, professors and researchers in higher education, and leaders for non-profit organizations.
