Academic Departments
Department of Elementary and Special Education
The Department of Elementary and Special Education offers comprehensive programs that prepare highly effective educators for early childhood, elementary, middle-level and special education classrooms.
Womack Educational Leadership Department
Named in honor of Dr. Bob Womack—a 1948 graduate who taught future educators at MTSU for more than five decades—the Womack Educational Leadership Department offers undergraduate and graduate programs that prepare students for variety of careers, as well as leadership and supervisory roles in schools. Rooted in a rich family legacy of MTSU graduates and dedicated educators, the department equips both new and experienced educators with the tools to lead, inspire, and make a lasting impact in their communities.
Offices
Office of Educator Preparation and Licensure (OEPL)
OEPL supports students and faculty across the COE by overseeing clinical experiences, student teaching placements, and licensure pathways. From admission into teacher preparation programs to the completion of licensure applications, the office ensures that candidates meet state and national standards for becoming effective, certified educators. Through strong school partnerships and individualized support, the office helps guide future teachers throughout the licensure process.
Centers
Ann Campbell Early Learning Center (ACE)
ACE is an inclusive preschool serving children ages 12 months through kindergarten. ACE offers a developmentally appropriate learning environment where children of all abilities—those who are typically developing and those with developmental delays or disabilities—learn and grow together through shared play and exploration.
Center for Educational Media (CEM)
The CEM supports supports educator preparation in the COE by providing specialized expertise and services in AVS Video Production, AVS Media Engineering and Equipment Checkout, as well as hosting professional learning opportunities through the CEM Professional Development Center, which includes the PK-12 Collaborative.
Center for the Study and Treatment of Dyslexia
The Center for the Study and Treatment of Dyslexia promotes an understanding of dyslexia and removes obstacles to reading and writing for children with dyslexia by adding to the scientific evidence as a producer and translator of research; preparing educators to identify, instruct, and support students at risk for or with characteristics of dyslexia; and supporting students, their families, and their teachers through evaluations, individualized instructional recommendations, and knowledge to enable self-advocacy in school and careers.
Child Development Center (CDC)
The CDC exists to provide high-quality childcare in a lab school environment, allowing early childhood majors the opportunity to practice teaching strategies while giving faculty a place to conduct research.
Home and Community-Based Early Intervention (HCBEI) Program
The HCBEI Program provides Early Intervention (sometimes identified as Developmental Therapy) to children from birth to three who have been diagnosed with a developmental delay or disability and qualify for services under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). The HCBEI Program is an approved Early Intervention Resource Agency through the Tennessee Early Intervention System (TEIS). Early intervention services are provided at no cost to eligible children and their families.
